Klay Thompson is the second son of Mychal and Julia Thompson born February 8, 1990 in Los Angeles, California. Mychal Thompson, Klay’s father, was a former NBA player and had won two Championships during his time with the Lakers. Julia White, Klay’s mom, was also a prominent athlete throughout high school and then at college. Julia played college basketball for the University of San Francisco and later graduated with a degree in Accounting. 

The two first met in a gym at Julia’s University when Mychal was already playing for the Trailblazers. They were instantly smitten with each other and hence began their sweet courtship. The couple got married in 1987, and have three children – Mychel, Klay and Trayce – who are all professional athletes. 

Klay has time and again acknowledged his parent’s role in his professional career and deems his mother highly for creating a family of athletes. Mychal Thompson instilled a passion for basketball in his children at an early age and coached the fundamentals of the sport. Klay shares a close bond with his both parents and two siblings.

The Thompsons lived in Portland following Mychal’s retirement from the NBA. There Klay’s father and Kermit Washington co-hosted a talk show on radio. Later when Mychal was called as a color commentator by the LA Lakers, the Thompsons moved to Los Angeles in 2003.
