ATLANTA (TND) — An incident at Atlanta's airport turned deadly Tuesday morning.
Reports indicated that a tire exploded killing two people and seriously injuring a third person.
The deadly incident happened in the Delta Airlines maintenance area atHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Delta Airlines acknowledged the deaths in a statement provided to WSB.
It read, "The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said teams were on the scene.
"I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their swift and full recovery. AFRD, APD, and HJAIA teams are on the scene, working diligently to address the situation,” Dickens wrote on X.
The union that represents airline industry members released a statement about incident it called "tragic."
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers wrote, "The IAM Union, which represents over 100,000 members in the airline industry across North America, stands in solidarity with the community of Atlanta and expresses our deepest condolences to the victims’ families following the tragic incident that occurred this morning. As a union dedicated to the well-being and safety of our members and the broader community, we will offer our resources to all those impacted by this tragic event.
The group demanded Delta and authorities for a thorough investigation to learn how the incident happened.
According to flight information, the tire belonged to a Boeing 757 that had traveled from Las Vegas to Atlanta.
Local media reported that the incident occurred when the tire was being removed.
Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims that died.
They were 58-year-oldMirko F. Marweg ofStone Mountain and 37-year-old Luis Aldarondo of Newnan. The identity of the person injured remains unknown as of early Tuesday evening.
The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time.
