WASHINGTON (TND) — The daughter of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, on Monday announced she will run in a special election to replace her mother in Congress.
Rep. Lee passed away in July at the age of 74. Her chief of staff confirmed she had pancreatic cancer at the time.
The representative also previously suffered from breast cancer, announcing in 2012 she had recovered.
The representative’s daughter Erica Lee Carter took to her mother’s X account Monday to say she plans to run to “finish for my mom.”
So many community members and Democratic stalwarts have requested that I consider completing her term this year by running in the November 5th Special Election,” Carter wrote. “After careful consideration, the answer is YES.”Precinct chairs from the Harris County Democratic Party will be responsible for choosing a nominee to face Republican Lana Centonze for the vacancy in November. Several Democrats have already thrown their names in the hat, including State Reps. Jarvis Johnson, D- Houston, and Christina Morales, D-Houston.
Vice President Kamala Harris this month eulogized Rep. Lee as a “force of nature.”
“She always expected in all of us that we would rise to a point of excellence, knowing that life was too short and there's too much to be done,” Harris said. "To honor her memory, let us continue to fight."
Former President Bill Clinton said Rep. Lee “really believed that we are all created equal.”
“We are the longest lasting democracy in human history because we had enough people like Sheila Jackson Lee,” he added.
