Trey Lance received a B+ from Mike McCarthy, who has keenly observed the growth of the young quarterback. The Dallas Cowboys head coach surmised that Lance continues to impress him as he takes more reps during the OTAs.

During Thursday’s press conference in Arlington, Mike McCarthy highlighted that Lance ‘is close to being the master of the system.’ The Dallas Cowboys reporter Michael Gehlken spoke with coach McCarthy.

Now starting to get the timing with the routes… He’s [Trey Lance] close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding [and] just needs as many reps as he can.

This word of approval comes after Lance disclosed that his confidence level has grown since he entered the NFL.

My confidence is much higher than it was when I got into the NFL, for sure… I feel great about where I'm at. Continuing to get better, continuing to learn.
Trey Lance said per Cowboys official website

The 2021, 3rd overall pick has yet to have a meaningful snap in the Cowboys colors since his move from the San Francisco 49ers.

I haven't played a snap, obviously, since last preseason. I'm just excited and looking forward to it and making sure I'm ready when that time does come.
Trey Lance added

Dak Prescott is the undisputed starter going into the last season with the Cowboys while Lance competes to be the No 2 with Cooper Rush.

Dak Prescott has been acting as a mentor for Trey Lance

In the early days of the Cowboys OTAs, quarterback coach Scott Tolzien reported the state of the QB room. He praised Prescott for taking Lance under his wing and helping him learn the playbook.

He [Dak Prescott] goes out of his way, on a play maybe that he has a long history with to maybe teach [Trey Lance] some of the nuances within. Beyond that, just teaching him the ropes, things that he’s used in the past [that have helped] him, both fundamentally and approach-wise.
Scott Tolzien told the press

The main part of learning a new offense is the schematics. What he witnessed in San Francisco was very different from how the Cowboys run things.

It's just a different offense. In San Francisco, we weren't really dropping out in the gun and passing on 1st and 10 too many times.
Trey Lance said

Trey Lance: “My mindset really hasn’t changed. Controlling what I can control. Continuing to learn the offense, continuing to get closer with (my teammates and coaches). Just working on that.”

The 24-year-old could benefit from Prescott’s contract dilemma with the Cowboys. If the 3 time Pro Bowler fails to convince Jerry Jones then the veteran owner would not hesitate to release him and perhaps go with Lance from 2025 or draft a new quarterback.
