SEATTLE - Could Seattle Seahawks' star quarterback Russell Wilson be playing in a Dallas Cowboys uniform next season?
Speculation is running rampant about that possibility - or several other possible trades involving Wilson - in the sports media.
The possible trade talk started earlier this month when Wilson expressed his unhappiness about being sacked so much (394 times during his Seahawks career) and about his lack of involvement in Seahawks' decision making in an interview with radio host Dan Patrick. Wilson also said he wasn't sure if he was available in a trade.
The speculation got another big boost Thursday after The Athletic sports site ran a detailed article about a supposed rift between Wilson and Seahawks management.
According to the article, Wilson expressed his own ideas on changes to fix the Seahawks' offensive scheme before a Thursday night game against the Arizona Cardinals this past season. Wilson’s thoughts were dismissed, which led him to storm out of the room, according to the report.
The article also reported that Russell Wilson’s confidence in the Seahawks has deteriorated to the point where those close to him have broached the idea of a trade with the front office.
“Some people around the league think a trade could happen, if not this offseason then sometime in the near future,” The Athletic wrote.
Then ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Wilson has not demanded a trade - yet. But if there were a trade, the only teams Wilson would be willing to play for are the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders or Chicago Bears.
Wilson is signed with the Seahawks through 2023 on a four-year extension that paid him $140 million. The contract has a no-trade clause, meaning Wilson has to approve any potential deal Seattle finds for him.
Wilson would have $39 million in dead money on his contract for 2021 if he were traded this offseason. But if Seattle were to wait until after June 1, they could actually save $6 million by trading Wilson, according to reports.
Of course, no one knows at this time whether a trade will actually happen. But if it does, the Seahawks are likely to get a quarterback in return and/or some choice draft picks.
