During Home Free’s Spring Tour in 2015, vocal percussionist Adam Rupp beatboxed his way onto the stage of South Portland and performed a vocalized drum solo to silence the skeptics. The performance took 7 minutes to show his versatile beatboxing and impressive vocal dexterity for his modulated vocalized drums and DJ beats.
Before introducing Rupp to the crowd, the bass of the group, Tim Foust, tells the audience that what they hear every performance is “one hundred percent live and one hundred percent acapella.” Apparently, there are still those who doubt their credibility, so he said, “[But] there’s still a few skeptics in the crowd, and there’s really only one way to silence those skeptics.” Foust exited the stage with the rest of the group and left the stage to Rupp by saying, “Would you all like to hear a drum solo?”
Then, there goes Adam Rupp! The Home Free member hyped up the crowd by acting out as if he was playing real drums and instruments while beatboxing. Whether he is imitating percussion instruments or dropping DJ sound effects, the crowd loudly cheered for Rupp for gravitating the crowd with fascination.
His early beatboxing memory tells you a fun and pure story of a boy. With no idea what beatboxing is all about, Rupp discovered that he had a talent for it when he was picking a fight at his school hall. It was only in his freshman year in college that he took the profession seriously and experimented from one sound to another.
With nineteen years of practice, Rupp’s still honing his craft and is ready for more experimentation. Talking about endless curiosity and exploration, he shared in Modern Magazine that most beatboxers are self-taught so he left some encouraging notes to readers.
“You can practice something almost whenever you want to, especially around other people, and especially when you’re close to them. Now that I mention it, that’s the best time so that they know you’re serious!”
Similarly, Home Free’s harmonic country-style tracks are a testament to an active musical commitment to one’s craft. When Rupp joined the acapella group in 2001, they went to over 200 shows across the United States and headlined their concerts starting with Crαzy Life Tour (2014), Spring Tour (2015), A Country Christmas Tour (2016) and among others.
Buckle up and let Home Free’s human beatbox Adam Rupp blow your mind with his immense talent in his vocalized drum solo!
